My Englewood Neighbor, Muammar Qaddafi
It seems Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi will be a close neighbor of mine (about ten land plots away). Apparently, the Libyan embassy owns a corner property of Englewood, NJ and they have been renovating the estate for the September arrival of Qaddafi when he intends to speak before the United Nations. What makes this really interesting is that Englewood has an enormous population of Orthodox Jews (roughly 30,000) of which many of the more prominent figures will live within two or three houses of Qaddafi’s traveling tent (he rolls internationally in a Bedouin styled tent of luxury). Adding insult to injury is the recent release to Libya and the subsequent heroes welcome of Abdel Basset Ali al-Megrahi, the Lockerbie bomber of PanAm 103, a flight that included 38 New Jersey residents. Thus, my little corner of Englewood will likely be an interesting hotbed of protest since many of the Orthodox Jews frequent Israel and are personally affronted by Qaddafi’s state sponsorship of terror against their homeland. Rabbi Shmuley Boteach (one of Qaddafi’s future neighbors) said, “When you have an international financier of terror moving in next door, it’s very unnerving.”
