Space Junk
When it comes to sheer emptiness, outer space has no rival. Yet mankind has managed to clutter the various levels of Earth's orbits with all sorts of space junk. Most of these objects are tracked in order to properly predict safe routes of passage through the debris fields. That task just become monumentally more difficult with the recent collision of a Russian and American satellite. A 1200 pound Iridium (providing satellite phone service) satellite was struck by a fifteen year old, 1900 pound Russian satellite with no guidance system creating a new debris field consisting of more than a thousand chunks. It is expected this incident may bring the need for tightened space junk regulations especially as more nations add functioning space program and private, commercial spaceflight becomes more commonplace.
