Stephen Hawking and God

Where did everything come from and for what purpose? That is the question that has perplexed mankind for ages leading to all sorts of fantastic stories and arcane science. Now there's a new theory and its sure to cause controversy. Notable super genius Stephen Hawking has pretty much put his cards on the table with a declaration that god did not create the universe. In The Grand Design, Hawking says, "It is not necessary to invoke God to light the blue touch paper [fuse] and set the universe going." Hawking argues that for the longest time, theology has used the notion of intelligent design for making an environment so suitable for humans. With the discovery of so many planetary systems since 1992, Hawking has dismissed the notion that these conditions are perfect for intelligent life. Rather, they're conducive for us, but any intelligent life that evolves on some distant world will clearly declare things are "perfect for them" even if it would kill us. The director of The Faraday Institute for Science and Religion counters that "Science provides us with a wonderful narrative as to how [existence] may happen, but theology addresses the meaning of the narrative."
