Practical Usage	My dad, who NEVER uttered a curse word in English (either profanity or obscenity), used to mutter this phrase under his breath when someone had done something egregiously horrid, something which seemed to justify a curse. I'm not even sure it was Italian. Since Dad didn't speak Italian, then if it WERE originally an Italian swear-phrase, he likely picked it up in his youth in New England, and almost certainly butchered the pronunciation horribly. If anyone has an idea re the original curse, or its meaning, I'm all ears.

Practical Usage	A very common insult and not as bad as the English equivalent. Always pay attention to the attitude of the speaker: getting a "vaffanculo" during a conversation might not be addressed to you but rather referred to the event you are talking about. E.g.: Studente A: "Forse dovremmo metterci a studiare" Studente B [ridendo]: "Ma vaffanculo!" #Translation: Student A: "Maybe we should get studying" Student B [laughing]: "O fuck off, mate!"
